About
MY BACKGROUND
With a passion for vocal jazz performance, speech pathology, and all things music, I have created this portfolio to outline my interests and their connection to my commitment to the requirements of the Leadership Scholar Program, specifically with regard to the Student Leadership Institute, Community Service and Student Organizations.
Personal Leadership Goals:
My personal leadership goal, as part of the Leadership Scholar Program at Ithaca College, was to gain the ability to be a more vocal and an active leader in group settings rather than being an observer and keeping my thoughts to myself.
Did I Accomplish This?
I feel that during my time at IC, I learned to be a more active leader and to communicate in a group setting more effectively by seeking opportunities to lead and contribute. I will continue to learn and grow as an individual in this area. I feel the SLI events that I attended gave me training in order to achieve my leadership objectives. In addition, through my experience in organizations and community service, I effectively learned, and put networking into action by discovering that this is also part of being an active leader. I have realized that by going out of my box and seeking opportunities from other schools on campus such as the James J. Whalen Center for Music, The Park school of Communications and the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance that I have connected the dots necessary to successfully put my career in place. Receiving the Peggy R. Williams Award for Academic and Community Leadership has been a meaningful validation and recognition for my efforts and I am grateful for being nominated. As I move forward in my education at New York Medical College for my MS SLP CCC I will continue to put this plan into action.
Student Leadership Institute Events
Participating in the Student Leadership professional development symposiums have been very inspiring. While signing up for SLI events, it seemed that I gravitated towards the "Leading Self" and "Leading Others" theme. The SLI events were introspective and the information was thought provoking. Each experience has added to my leadership skills and helped me to achieve my goals. I appreciate the Certificate of Achievement from the Student Leadership Institute for attending more that 6 of these events in two of the categories. Click on the gold boxes below to see the SLI events I attended, what I learned and how I will apply the information to my daily life.
WHAT I’VE LEARNED
Community Service
Volunteering allows you to meet a community need while interacting with the population being served. Over the past four years I have had both direct service and virtual opportunities to help serve the local community, the Ithaca College community, as well as in my home area. Giving of your time is personally rewarding and creates a sense of gratitude for your personal blessings and gives you the opportunity to give back to others. Click on the gold boxes below to see where I've helped.
WHERE I'VE HELPED
Student Organizations
My organizational goal was to be a role model and to inspire other students to become involved in student organizations that they are passionate about. I would like others to see me as trustworthy and hard working. I have moved from a co-host position to a solo host to podcast host and now Jazz and Specialty Director in my four years with WICB. I feel that the faith the organization had in my abilities evidences the accomplishment of my goal.
WICB RADIO 91.7 FM
My Contribution
As a member of WICB RADIO 91.7 FM since 2018, I have been committed as a live broadcasting solo DJ Radio Host on WICB Specialty Programming, Jazz Impressions Tuesday and Thursdays at noon. As of Sept 2019 I also co-host with DJ Sarah on Sunday evenings, Eve Out Loud. For Spring 2022 I am alongside DJ Downtown for the Funk Show on Friday evenings. In addition to live hosting, the DJ position also creates the playlist, operates the board and takes requests via phone and other social media. I work alongside other DJs that report the news and sports and fill in for those roles when needed. Starting in August 2021, I have taken on the role of Jazz and Specialty Director which duties include scheduling the DJs, reviewing new music and office hours for live support. Check out the podcast I host for WICB, Out to Lunch as well.
While working from home during the Covid-19 pandemic I created the podcast, Spotlight: Women in Jazz that is advertised on WICB promo spots and distributed on several major podcast platforms. With this position I reach out to industry female jazz musicians and interview them about their experience as a woman in jazz. I will continue this podcast after graduation.
This organization has given me a feeling of being part of a team that is connected both to the school and the local community. I hope that as a radio DJ podcast host, and Jazz & Specialty Director, that I am providing the listeners with an escape from the stresses of daily life.
